There has been a long history of people riding the Heaphy Track, with locals and cycle touring clubs using it as a fun way of joining the dots between Golden Bay and Karamea. When mountain bikes first arrived here in the mid-1980s, it was only natural that they would gravitate to the Heaphy Track in search of adventure and whatever came their way. It soon became one of New Zealand’s premier mountain bike adventure rides, but when Kahurangi National Park was formed in 1996, mountain bikes were banned. Eventually, DOC reversed the ban and the track can now be ridden
from May 1 to November 30.
The Heaphy by mountain bike is generally a two or three-day adventure depending on daylight, weather and fitness. It’s a great track to simply cruise along, enjoying the scenery, the rugged beaches and open tops. The riding is fantastic from either direction, but there is something special about starting from the Collingwood end and dropping to the West Coast with its sea air, crashing waves, sandy beaches and nikau palms. The track receives on average 4000mm of rain.
