Wilderness has been published by Lifestyle Publishing since October 1991. The magazine was founded by David Hall and is now published by his son Alistair Hall and his wife pelin Hall.
Each issue, Wilderness chronicles the New Zealand outdoors in all its forms. The magazine struck a cord with readers and advertisers from its first issue, with some readers and advertisers from way back then still with Wilderness today. It’s been a fascinating journey as tramping, hiking and exploring the great New Zealand outdoors has grown to be the third most popular pastime in New Zealand. Wilderness has grown too – in acceptance and credibility among readers and those in the outdoor industry.
