Tamatea is one of our 75 Top Trampers’ Peaks. View all peaks in the list.

The Dusky Track is a well-known stomping ground for trampers keen to test their resolve against Fiordland conditions. It traverses everything from marshy valley floors to tarn-studded alpine terrain, including a section at almost 1100m along the Pleasant Range.

The ascent to Tamatea Peak (1640m) from Lake Roe Hut delivers an extra 500m of elevation with spectacular rewards. From the summit, views stretch out over Lake Horizon, Pleasant Range and Tamatea Dusky Sound. Signs of human activity are non-existent: the true wilderness of Fiordland. A side trip to the summit of Tamatea Peak is a must-do for capable trampers.

To reach Tamatea Peak, follow the poled track behind Lake Roe Hut, climbing to the east. The track ends at Lake Roe. Follow the shore to the northeast and cross the lake’s outlet.

From here, begin climbing gradually through tussock to the east to attain the spur that links with Pt1320 and Pt1595. A few cairns are scattered along the length of the spur, which soon becomes steep. Care must be taken not to venture too far east as the spur terminates in bluffs on that side.

Near the top of the spur, begin heading more to the north and cross a small basin before climbing to the saddle that separates Tamatea Peak from Pt1595. You will attain the ridgeline here, and by following it northwest you can make a steep rocky ascent of the peak itself, to the backdrop of the numerous small rocky basins and lakes of the Merrie Range.

Tamatea Peak can be subject to snow at any time of the year, and in such conditions should only be attempted by suitably experienced parties equipped with mountaineering equipment.

Lake Roe Hut is 8–10hr from Hauroko Burn Hut, where most parties start the Dusky Track.
