Our Rating:

The Latok Alpine is a breathable and fully waterproof gaiter designed for lower volume boots. It provides for a slimmer fit, which both minimises the risk of crampon puncture and helps avoid slumping.

A flexible polymer strip provides rigidity, which also helps to keep the gaiters up.

The Latok is a comfortable gaiter, being both breathable and waterproof. A stretch rear panel helps ensure a close and comfortable fit.

Despite their light feel, this gaiter stayed up well. The ankle area is reinforced with a nylon fabric and the replaceable PU-coated under-strap showed little sign of wear after a few outings.

Unfortunately, the straps can only be replaced with Rab straps, limiting the ability to fix them on the go.

Rab claims that the calf cinch cord is designed to be operated with a single, gloved hand. It’s true, though I’m not sure how valuable this feature is.

Disappointingly, the lace hook is made of plastic. It held up over the review, but past experience has instilled in me a distrust of plastic gaiter hooks.

In summary:

The Good: Lightweight yet durable, well-fitted, breathable.

The Bad: Not suitable for bulky boots, plastic lace hook.

Verdict: These gaiters strike a good balance between weight, comfort and durability. The hard-wearing ankle fabric, fitted design and replaceable strap should guarantee a solid return on investment.
