Walkshorts and Walk1200km writer

Wilderness is New Zealand’s leading outdoor magazine, published 12 times a year and serving more than 5500 subscribers.

It’s an award-winning magazine, regularly scooping numerous journalism, editor and magazine awards at the annual Magazine Publishers Association magazine awards.

We are in need of a writer to help spread the workload and contribute monthly stories to the magazine.

All the roles described below are remote work opportunities and can be done by one person or split between two or more freelancers.

Requirements:

  • Supply 4-6 news articles each month.
  • Articles should be fresh and unique to Wilderness. Most require brief interviews.
  • Length: 200-350words each.
  • Source photos to illustrate.
  • Must meet strict deadlines.
  • Remuneration: $350/month, paid on publication.
  • Start: January (with a Feb 2 deadline) for the March 2023 issue.

2 – Walk1200km profiles and stories

There are hundreds of interesting people participating in the Walk1200km challenge and we want as many of them profiled as possible.

  • Collate interesting comments from the Walk1200km Facebook group for a monthly tips and inspiration column.
  • Find interesting walking-related stories to write. 400-500wds.
  • Source print-ready photos from interview subjects and Facebook commenters.
  • Meet strict deadlines.
  • Remuneration: $100 per profile, paid on publication. 50c/word for walking-related stories. $50-$120 for the tips and inspiration column (depending on number of tips received).
  • Start: January (with a Feb 2 deadline) for the March 2023 issue.
