Meg Hut, Pisa Conservation Area

Tussock wonderland

In a valley in the dry high country hills of Pisa Conservation Area, Meg Hut provides a cosy bunk for the night.

The eight-bunker is an old musterers hut with an open fireplace and plenty of firewood outside.

The hut is reached on the Cardrona-Roaring Meg Pack Track, which starts near the Roaring Meg power station. The track heads up the Meg valley before reaching the dam that supplies the power station. The trail continues up valley before reaching the valley head at a small saddle. Here, the track climbs to a high point, just below Pt 1202, before ascending down to another picturesque tussock-clad valley to reach Meg Hut.

From the hut, the Cardona Cromwell Pack Track provides a route up the Pisa Range to Deep Creek Hut and down to Cromwell, or you can retrace your steps back over the pass and continue on the Roaring Meg Pack Track to the Tuohys Gully car park in the Cardrona Valley. Otherwise, head back the way you came, to the Roaring Meg car park.
