Finding joy in walking

Photo: Sue Lovatt

We asked participants what brings them joy on their walks. You might be surprised at what we found.

“Usually the little things. A flower, a bird, an insect … And sometimes big things like a stunning vista or a goal achieved.”
– Sue Lovatt

“I love the freedom that walking gives to my mind. I find it difficult to think of work when walking, and instead allow my thoughts to wander through all sorts of other, much less stressful things.”
– Dan Lodge

“My passion is tramping above the bushline, so walking brings the added joy of ongoing fitness, fresh air, changing weather and the different mood it adds to each day. My wee dog Finn loves it too.”
– Dina Parker

“The random pieces of wonder that I experience with every walk. There is never a walk that doesn’t provide a positive surprise and add to my day.”
– Stuart Hill

“It’s got to be my dog, as she reminds me to live in the moment and find joy in the little things, like a piece of driftwood.”
– Mari van Baarsen

Every time you walk, something changes. It might be a new flower, a cooler morning or hitting a sunset perfectly. I love the peace and just being able to absorb my surroundings.”
– Niki Donnelly

“I live near Cornwall Park in Auckland and walk there most days. For me it’s the breeze, the birdsong, the farm animals, and smiling at passing walkers.”
– Jan Morrison

“I spent six hours walking in our native bush monitoring kiwi yesterday. It’s rugged land and very tiring. But to be out there, listening to the birdsong, seeing tree ferns and other native trees, smelling the earth scents, walking on cliff tops by the Pacific Ocean – it was magic. I returned home exhausted but fulfilled.”
– Duncan Smith

“Being in nature, encounters with other walkers (and their dogs), and good footwear all bring me joy.”
– Louise Slocombe
