Nov 5: Find a teammate or two and enter the Big Bang Adventure race being held in the Kapiti/Horowhenua region. The 30 to 50km course includes mountain biking, hiking, tubing, navigating skills and will have some surprises along the way. www.bigbangadventure.co.nz

Bannockburn, Central Otago

Nov 5-6: On this weekend members of the Otago Tramping and Mountaineering Club are planning day trips in and around the Bannockburn area of Central Otago. Depending on what people want, the trips might include mountain biking, hiking or even a vineyard trail. Contact Jill McAliece, 03 454 4211.

Nov 12: Join the Wellington Tramping and Mountaineering Club on a day walk around Wellington’s south coast from Hawkins Hill to Red Rocks. This is a classic mountain bike route but well worth walking at a slower pace to take in the views over the city’s southern suburbs and also to the Rimatuka Range and South Island. Contact Amanda Wells, chiefguide@wtmc.org.nz

Makahu Spur, Kaweka Range

Nov 19: Get out on this Saturday with the Napier Tramping Club to tramp up to Kaweka J preceding an easy walk to North Kaweka. The six-hour trip will then take the unmarked route down Dicks Spur to the 1099m high point before dropping down to Kaweka Flats Bivvy. To join or get more info email: trans@ction.co.nz

Nov 26-27: Join members of Auckland Tramping Club’s Under 40s Faction on an overnight trip to the rustic Ten Man Hut in Tongariro National Park. A must for hut baggers, the characteristic low-tech hut is situated in stunning surroundings. Contact Jane Dudley, jane.dudley@gmail.com
