The track passes through mostly re-growth forest at first before entering an area of scrub with grass clearings where frosts prevent any seedlings from establishing.
Once the track rises out of the frost pocket you are among giant trees until you come to the new Waihaha Hut beautifully sited with huge rimu surrounding and the Waihaha River flowing nearby.
