Easy walking on Rangitoto's volcanic trails. Photo: Supplied

Tramp through New Zealand’s largest pohutukawa forest on this relaxing walk from the Rangitoto Wharf to the 260m summit and back again.

Highlights include lava caves and the great views overlooking downtown Auckland, the islands of the gulf, the Waitakere Ranges and even the Coromandel Range.

The island was declared pest-free in August 2011 and is home to many native bird species.

Take a torch to fully explore the caves and wear good hiking shoes or boots.
