In each issue, three new #microchallenges are set to add interest and silliness to your kilometres.

These three fun #microchallenges will help you to appreciate your surroundings and have fun on your walks. Our favourite six #microchallenge completers receive a special badge, and the best entry for each challenge receives a prize from our partners.

How to enter

You must be a registered Walk1200km participant to enter. Upload a photo with the relevant hashtag and caption to the Walk1200km Facebook group, or email your photo to walk1200km@lifestylepublishing.co.nz with the hashtag included in the subject line by August 30. Winners will be published in the November 2026 issue of Wilderness.

#microchallenge20: Find some ruins

Walking provides a chance to explore and uncover a slice of the past. On your walk, can you find signs of pre-European or pioneer activity, such as a pā site, kūmara pits, maybe some rusting logging equipment left beside a track or the remains of a settlement? #microchallenge20

Partner prize: Big Agnes mtnGLO Pump and Light battery powered inflation pump and lantern worth $100.

#microchallenge21 – eclipse the sun. Photo: IStock Photo

#microchallenge21: Eclipse the sun

Photographing someone who is standing partially or entirely in front of the low winter sun can create a beautiful effect. See what tricks of the light you can capture next time the sun shines.

Partner prize: $100 Backcountry Cusine Gift Voucher
