Lowa’s Ranger EVO GTX Wide balances top-end durability with refined comfort and forgiving stiffness to suit multi-day tramps and heavy loads.

The plethora of high-tech materials and construction techniques available to the outdoor industry have enabled footwear that fits and performs better than ever before, as well as being increasingly specialised. But although it’s great to have plenty of choice for new boots, the range of options can be bewildering. For trampers who prefer a more traditional boot and the unquestionable toughness of premium leather, the Ranger EVO GTX Wide accommodates broad feet without omitting the nuanced anatomics and flawless construction of modern boots. Its wider, higher volume forefoot is also beneficial for foot conditions such as bunions or neuromas, as well as allowing space for foot swelling. Wide fit boots allow for more natural foot splay which, in combination with the wider sole platform, can enhance stability and balance too.

This medium stiffness trekking boot is designed for carrying 25kg-plus loads during rugged back-country trips and into moderate transalpine terrain. The upper materials include nubuck leather with Gore-Tex and a protective rand, paired with a rocker-friendly Vibram Apptrail Divo outsole. Sandwiched between the two is a forgiving bi-density midsole and a full-length 5mm nylon shank. Also included are Lowa’s distinctive features, such as the C4 tongue with an X-Lacing stud, which prevents tongue-creep, and roller eyelets for precise and comfortable lacing.

Among limited options for wide-fitting boots, this model is at the heavier end of the scale, pointing to both its durability and capability off-track. It can take a C1 crampon, but doesn’t have the same level of edging ability or precision as a narrower, more technical boot, instead offering a little more flex and an easier ride for your feet and joints.

Key features we like

Burly, waterproof uppers

Open pored 2.2–2.4mm full-grain sanded nubuck is the hide of choice for these tough boots. The few external seams are located away from the most scuff-prone areas. Hydrophobic treatment during the tanning process provides the nubuck with inherent waterproofing, but like most trekking boots they’re also Gore-Tex lined, which is a bonus during colder months. The synthetic lining is fast-drying.

Full rand protection

A rubber rand wraps the upper from toe to heel, providing maximum abrasion protection for the leather when you’re kicking the boot edge in for grip or bashing up riverbeds. The rand also protects feet from knocks and offers additional grip during boulder hops and scrambles.

Precise, comfortable lacing that stays in place

Ball-bearing roller eyelets over the midfoot make lacing smooth and precise, while a pair of locking eyelets separate lace tension between midfoot and cuff. On the upper tongue, Lowa’s distinctive X-Lacing stud provides a reliable means of locking the tongue in place both horizontally and vertically, and maintains even lace pressure to prevent hot spots and blisters.

Full-length nylon shank

The full-length nylon stabiliser tapers from 5mm at the heel to 3mm at the forefoot and spans the full width of the boot. This provides ‘medium flex’ – a sweet spot for comfortable, protective all-day tramping with heavy loads and confidence off-track without the stiffness of a more mountain-oriented boot. The outsole has an aggressive heel brake and a curved front profile for fluid gait, and can be resoled.

Wilderness verdict

With a minimal break-in time, this highly durable trekking boot is built for big days in the hills, year round. It’s ideal for trampers and hunters who travel riverbeds and get onto the tops but don’t need the full transalpine or mountain specs of more technical boots.
