Altra: The right shoe is one that disappears on your foot.

Finding the right shoe isn’t about following trends or buying the most expensive model. It’s about discovering a shoe that fits your foot.

Selling shoes for a living, you get to see and hear it all. Wide feet, narrow feet, bunions, plantar fasciitis, old injuries, and countless stories from people searching for a shoe that feels comfortable enough to enjoy the adventures they love.

After fitting hundreds of people, I’ve come to one simple conclusion: there is no single shoe that’s right for everyone.

Every foot is different. Some people need width through the forefoot, some need extra volume over the top of the foot and others require additional support or cushioning. Feet simply aren’t designed to fit neatly into one shoe shape.

But there is one brand that has consistently stood out for people who genuinely struggle to find enough room where they need it most.

As a retail store owner, you learn to pay attention when the same product keeps being mentioned. I was getting regular emails and visits from Te Araroa hikers asking if we stocked one particular brand after they’d worn them for hundreds or even thousands of kilometres and had the greatest experiences.

Long-distance hikers are some of the best people to learn from. They push footwear to its absolute limits, so when they repeatedly ask for the same shoe it’s worth listening.

After a few months of requests, I decided to bring Altra into MD Outdoors. Looking back, it was one of the best business decisions – and one of the best personal decisions – I made that year.

Why Altra shoes are different

I’ve always struggled to find shoes that stay comfortable over long distances. My feet are wide through the forefoot, I have slight bunions on both and I’ve broken several toes. My feet don’t appreciate being squeezed into narrow shoes.

The first time I put on a pair of Altras, I honestly thought: ‘No way … this is so comfortable.’

I’d never worn a zero-drop shoe before, so that felt different. My calves worked a little harder at first, but it wasn’t uncomfortable – it was simply something my body needed to adapt to.

Then I took them hiking.

For the first time, I was able to spend hours on the trail without my toes aching.

Since then, my Altras have been everywhere with me. They’ve crossed rivers, climbed snowy mountains with microspikes, scrambled through rocky terrain, become my everyday work shoes and recently carried me more than 350km around Japan across cities, villages and mountain trails.

Not one blister.

Not one sore foot.

The best way I can describe the experience is that they make me feel connected to the ground. My personal favourite model is the Altra Lone Peak because the lower-profile midsole gives me confidence on uneven terrain while still providing enough cushioning to stay comfortable all day. It almost feels like the freedom of being barefoot, but with the protection you need for long hikes.

What has been even more rewarding is seeing that same reaction from customers.

People who have spent years trying different footwear finally put on a pair that simply feels right. You can often see the relief on their faces before they even say anything.

Then they come back weeks later to tell us how much more enjoyable walking has become.

Those moments are some of the most rewarding parts of working in outdoor retail.

That said, Altra isn’t the right shoe for everyone.

Many of their models use a zero-drop platform, meaning the heel and forefoot sit at the same height. For some people this feels fantastic but others may need time to transition. If you’ve had previous Achilles, calf or foot injuries, it’s worth discussing the change with your podiatrist or healthcare professional before making the switch.

Altra also offers models with a 4mm heel-to-toe drop, providing an option for people who like the foot-shaped design but don’t want to move straight to zero drop.

Those with very narrow feet may also prefer a more traditional fit. That’s why trying shoes on in store and being properly fitted is so important.

Emily says Altra footwear has been life-changing.

The bottom line

One thing I’ve learned after fitting hundreds of people is that you should never buy a shoe simply because someone else loves it. Even the most popular shoe in the store still has to suit your feet.

For me, Altra has been genuinely life-changing, and I’ve watched it become the same for many others with wider feet, bunions, or who simply want their toes to move more naturally.

Finding the right shoe isn’t about chasing trends or buying the most expensive model.

It’s about finding the shoe that disappears on your feet.
