Wilderness asked trampers for their favourite Christmas tramping traditions.

For Jo Lai, it’s a yearly tradition to spend Christmas Day at a hut. She says her group keeps their treats light, such as chocolate and Christmas crackers.

“Last year some carried in champagne and beer – shoutout to their dedication!”

Sasha Johnston packs in a store-bought pavlova with a can of whipped cream and a tin of passionfruit pulp.

“It doesn’t need to go in the fridge, and it’s delicious!”

Arda van Kuyk and her partner (pictured) spent last Christmas on Rakiura’s North-West Circuit. This year they will hike Ruapehu’s Round the Mountain Track.

They ‘smuggle’ in an apricot tart each and decorate their packs with tinsel.
