New and interesting gear we’ve discovered this month

Big Agnes Fly Creek UL Quilt $799.99 | 434g

As far as ultralight sleep systems go, quilts are pretty hard to beat for versatility. For several years the Big Agnes Fussell UL quilt has been my go-to for mild weather tramping and bikepacking. Although its design was imperfect, it provided incredibly packable insulation that worked well, whether in a bivvy bag or on a hut bunk. The new Fly Creek UL quilt is far more developed and functional while retaining similar weight and fill specs to the original: 420g with 227g of 850 fill-power water-repellent down.

We’re looking forward to testing its features, which include a FlipIt footbox, full-length lightweight zip and baffled draught collar.

Merrell Agility Peak 6 $299 | 556g

Lately my hooves have been shod with the new Agility Peak 6, a high-traction trail shoe that’s designed for long miles on rugged tracks. We took note of the aggressive and well-spaced Vibram MegaGrip traction lug sole (8mm drop), rock plate and breathable TPU-reinforced upper. On first impression the FloatPro foam midsole is plushly forgiving without diminishing a planted underfoot feel on trail. Watch out for a review soon.

Zoleo Satellite Communicator $385 (plus subscription from $35/month) | 150g

Slightly bigger and heavier than a pack of cards, the Zoleo is a satellite communication device similar to Garmin’s InReach Messenger. Paired with a phone app, it uses the Iridium network (or wifi/mobile data when available) to provide worldwide SMS and email messaging, SOS alert, location tracking and a single preset message check in.

Advantages over Messenger are that messaging is simpler and smoother, and you can use Medical Assist for non-emergency advice from a medical professional. Unlike Messenger, this device doesn’t have a screen; when not paired to the phone app, it’s limited to SOS and check-in only. But with plans available from $35/month (+ $9/month for unlimited location sharing), the startup and subscription costs for the Zoleo can work out cheaper than Messenger. Battery life is 200+ hours when checking messages every 12 minutes, and it has a 2hr charge time.
