The roll-top Beta Light 45 (pictured above) has a feature set and strip-down versatility that is similar to the XT Series Pack, but with simpler, tougher side pockets and compression straps. Combined with Challenge Sailcloth Ultra 200 UHMWPE for durability, the minimal design makes the Beta Light suitable for bush bashing and alpine travel. Complete with pockets on the shoulder straps, a removable hip belt and an overflow sleeve, it can be pared back to a featherweight 521g and comes in three sizes.

Aarn Pace Magic 40

The ‘balance’ ethos of Aarn’s large packs has trickled down to the excellent value Pace Magic 40, which combines large hip-mounted balance pockets with a comfortable and breathable harness. This light but thoroughly featured roll-top 40l pack is made from 100D Robic ripstop nylon with a 210D Duramax base. Features include a top pocket, side pockets, a mesh overflow sleeve and shoulder strap pockets, as well as pole and ice axe attachments.

Macpac Rift 40

Nine external pockets keep gear and food organised and accessible on-the-go, and add a further 7l of storage. It’s made from 200D PU-coated ripstop nylon/UHMWPE, with breathable shoulder straps and a padded back panel. Removing the frame reduces its weight to 790g, and it comes in two sizes. 

Rab Syclon XP 40 Waterproof

The Syclon XP stands out for being fully waterproof (IPX4) and having a breathable Aerofit trampoline-style back panel and a harness design that’s contoured to wrap the hips for stability. The streamlined shape includes plenty of features, including a zip-access rear compartment for a hydration bladder or wet clothing.
