It’s often difficult to see improvements in a product by simply looking at it. Such is the case with Macpac’s Resolution XPD, but improved it is.

By changing to Pertex Shield AP fabric, Macpac as made gains in four areas: water resistance, breathability, reduced weight (m: 660g; w: 570g) and stiffness. Although quite a noisy fabric, Shield AP’s moisture management translates into superior comfort for the wearer, and despite its robust feel, will become more supple over time.

A Kiwi-length jacket, it accommodates as many base- and mid-layers as required, and with long arms and a nice cut, the hem stays put when you’re reaching for hand-holds. Stretch panels across the back improve comfort and movement. The Resolution is generously sized, so checking the sizing chart before purchase is recommended.

Unlike many jackets, the lower pockets are slightly below hip belt level for improved access when wearing a pack. These pockets have water resistant zips and decent storm flaps. In addition, there are two external breast pockets, plus a third hidden behind the main zip’s storm flap.

The high-volume hood has vertical adjustment set high on the crown. Once cinched up, and in conjunction with the hood-opening adjusters, it provides a secure retreat from the worst of weather. When the main zip is up, the chin guard is non-invasive, while the high collar offers maximum protection from the wind.

Two lower draw cords also keep wind out of the jacket. The waist draw cords are mounted inside the lower pockets, while the hem cord is externally mounted.

The Resolution is designed with the serious user in mind. Although expensive, it’s tough yet light, and a worthy investment for those wanting long life and performance from their rainwear.
