Arc’teryx Atom LT Hoody $460

My favourite ever clearance find, this stylish mid-layer is the ultimate in comfort. Light, pliant and unreasonably soft, I was smitten the moment I put it on.

It’s insulated with synthetic Coreloft, which adds little bulk against the body but provides a surprising amount of warmth – particularly when paired with a base layer. Being synthetic, it is quick to dry and still keeps me warm when it’s wet.

The cuffs are snug, and the hood well-fitted, so with the waist cinched tight, the jacket leaks little heat when you are sedentary. Breathability on the move, however, is good, due to the Polartec side panels and underarms, which allow the wearer to put in the hard yards for a long stretch before clamming up.

At the risk of sounding nerdy, the zip is also a real thrill to use. It slides like butter in the hand and catches on itself to prevent self-opening.

Perhaps best of all is the jacket’s flexibility, which makes it a perfect choice for climbing, trail-running or simply relaxing in comfort around the camp or hut.

Verdict: A comfortable mid-layer; perfect for the active tramper.
