At just 21 months, June Ballantine has conquered the trip to Packhorse Hut (with dad Matt).

The Malcolm-Tait family – Richard, Sylvie, Suze and Edward – visited Aoraki’s Grand Plateau and spent a chilly night in Plateau Hut. “Here we are looking like we are posing for the cover of some kind of Nordic synth-pop album, with Aoraki and the hut in the background,” said Richard. “Best trip ever.”

Christine Byrne escaped the “constant rain in the north” for three days on the Abel Tasman Coast Track. “I certainly hit the sweet spot with fabulous weather for the whole time,” she says. “A real tonic for the soul!”

While we’re experiencing winter, Chris Turner was on a summer hike in the Tusheti region of the Caucasus mountains, Georgia. “I walked from Omalo village to Diklo village at 2000m,” Chris said. “ The mountains of Dagestan, Russia, are in the background. Absolutely stunning.”

Avril Walker, Anna Bloxham and Lara Bloxham took a snack break between muddy patches along the Rakiura Track.

Megan Walsh tramped the Leith Hill and Hogs Back Tracks behind Castle Hill Village. “It was a cold start but turned into a beautiful winter day with blue sky and amazing views,” she said.

Pete and Finlay Watson enjoyed a “very cold but absolutely stunning winter overnighter at Royal Hut”.

Mark van Wijk had a deserved afternoon tea break at the remains of the trig on Arowhana (1439m) in the Raukumara Range. “I got lucky for this peak with a perfect combination of a rare weekend with fresh snow and safe hiking conditions,” he said.

Luke (11) and William (9) Davis found mud a plenty – and amazing weather – on the Rakiura Track Great Walk.
