With the Great Walks season upon us, Martin Walker from Christchurch independent retailer Further Faster picked out the essential kit for your walk.
Martin runs Further Faster and says trips into the outdoors for him are all about going fast and light. All the gear he’s recommended here is what he personally uses.
Sierra Designs Nitro Quilt 20 $549
According to Martin, quilts are the way to go: “It has a comfort temperature rating of 0֯, so is plenty warm enough for summer Great Walks, but at 750g is a fraction the weight of a normal sleeping bag.”
Black Diamond Remogi Lantern $69.99
“It’s USB-rechargeable, a really tiny package and super handy when in the hut,” says Martin. The lantern’s six LED lights emit 100-lumens and have a run time of up to 10-hours. 86g.
Aarn Mountain Magic 44 $399
“This pack weighs just 1200g and with the balance pockets is the most comfortable carry system I’ve used. It makes walking long distances much easier,” says Martin.
Montane Pac Plus $399
“A really light 285g jacket, yet with the waterproof and breathable performance of Gore-Tex. It is fully featured for use in the hills,” says Martin.
Salewa Mountain Trainer Lite Mid GTX $399
Martin says there are four reasons to use this boot: “It’s easy to use, grippy, light and supportive.” Weighing just 1130g a pair and with a Gore-Tex lining, rubber toe bumper and protective overlays on the upper fabric, it’s the perfect boot for any of the Great Walks.
Injinji Hiker plus liner $49.95
“With Injinji, each toe has its own little sock and that means you’re far less likely to get blisters,” explains Martin. The liner wicks away sweat to keep feet dry while the Hiker is worn over the top for increased cushion and protection.
