Loop the loop

A traverse of the Arthur Range between Kiwi Saddle and John Reid Huts offers superb alpine tramping and makes a good introduction to off-track alpine tramping for suitably experienced parties.

On a clear day, there are stunning views southwards over the Wangapeka Valley towards Mt Owen, while to the north trampers can overlook the remote Crow River catchment.

From Rolling Junction, head up the Wangapeka Track, cross the footbridge and climb the Kiwi Track to the bush edge and the six bunk Kiwi Saddle Hut. From here, a good track leads onto the Arthur Range, where the one-hour side trip to Mt Patriarch is well worth the diversion in good weather.

Travel along the Arthur Range is straightforward with just a few steep sections and although the route is unmarked, there is a good trail to follow.
A night at John Reid Hut is recommended; sitting just above the bush edge, this hut has one of the best views in the park.

On the final day, head down the steep Chummies Track and ford the Wangapeka to complete the loop.
