802g (reg) / R4.7
What we liked: Supremely comfortable and packable, warm, easy to operate valves
What we don’t like: Expensive, large dimensions not ideal in some tents
Overview
This mat introduces a new gold standard of comfort for packable sleeping mats. It’s nearly 12cm thick and offers car-camping luxury for less than 800g (mat only) in a packed size that’s practical for multi-day tramps. It has stretch-knit fabric, reflective insulation and raised side baffles that contribute to the best possible sleep.
Ease of use
The extra-large pump bag will inflate the mat in under 90 seconds via a one-way inlet valve. Turning the outlet valve bleeds pressure for easy fine-tuning, and opening it fully provides rapid deflation. The corner-located TwinLock valves help prevent accidental deflation when adjusting pressure in the dark.
Weight and packed size
Considering its high R-value, the NeoLoft’s packability is comparable to some three- or four-season mats, but for significantly more comfort. With the pump bag, stuff sack and repair kit it weighs just over 800g, and it occupies a similar volume to a 1.5l water bottle. Using a compression strap, I was able to compress it even further.
Shape and comfort
This is the most comfortable mat I’ve slept on. I experimented with air pressure to find the sweet spot: if the mat was too soft the sides collapsed when I changed sleeping position (a wider size would eliminate this), so I ran this test mat firmer than usual, as the stretchy face fabric provides further cushioning. It’s available in regular (56x185cm, 11.7cm thick), regular wide or large. Most regular mats are around 51cm wide; if your tent is already a tight fit, consider the additional space this mat occupies.
Insulation
At R4.7, the NeoLoft is suitable for year-round use in all but the coldest conditions. For many users, this will be the only mat they ever need.
Value
Compared with other mats with similar R-values, the NeoLoft is expensive, but no other mat is as comfortable for the packability.
Why buy the NeoAir?
The NeoAir is unquestionably deluxe, but if you already use a high-volume mat that suits your body shape, the difference may be less obvious. It’s best for first-time or upgrade purchasers, particularly taller or heavier people or those who are uncomfortable on a thinner mat. It might not make the packing list for a 10-day trip, but for shorter trips it’s worth its weight in quality sleep.
We recommend for: Trampers and campers seeking maximum sleeping comfort, year round.
