In winter’s changeable conditions, the correct clothing will keep you warm and comfortable and could save your life.
Start with:
1. Base layer: a breathable, lightweight and quick-drying short-sleeved top.
2. A winter extra: add a long-sleeved thermal.
3. Midlayer: a fleece or long-sleeved woollen top. You’ll most likely get warm when tramping, and this top can be peeled off easily and stored at the top of your pack.
4. Insulation layer: a synthetic or down jacket. If not wearing it while walking, keep it near the top of your pack so you can grab it easily at a lunch break or at camp, when your body temperature is cooling down rapidly.
5. Wind and waterproof layer: a quality rain jacket is essential. It will keep you dry and provide protection from the wind.
Leave cotton and denim clothing at home and instead pack wool or synthetics like fleece and polyprops. These will keep you warm even when wet.
Pack a pair of long thermals to put on when an extra cold blast hits, and choose thick, long socks made from a synthetic and wool blend to keep your toes warm.
Gloves and a woollen hat make all the difference on the windy tops. Keep these, and additional warm and waterproof layers, in a drybag near the top of your pack for easy access.
