Winter won't stop an intrepid gear reviewer from getting outside. Photo: Mark Watson

Later this year we’ll be saying goodbye to gear editor as he leaves to continue other adventures.

That means we need someone to fill his rather big boots. Mark has written most of Wilderness’s gear articles, including reviews, the online-only Gear File and other stories.

Like Mark, you’ll need to have a good understanding of modern outdoor gear, its purpose and materials. You’ll know the pros and cons of down sleeping bags versus synthetics, or the difference between three-season and four-season tents – and the use each can be put to.

You’ll also be keen to keep an eye on the gear market and know what’s trending and popular. You’ll have ideas for gear-related stories that readers will appreciate, learn from and find entertaining. Being able to write clearly, concisely and with a tone that engages readers from start to finish is a must.

This is a freelance position, requiring anything from one to four reviews a month, one (or more) online Gear File stories per month and other gear-related stories. You’ll also be digitally savvy and able to take great photographs to illustrate stories and short video clips for use on social media.

The successful applicant will have a strong background in playing or working in the outdoors.

If you’d like to apply for the role or find out more about it, email editor@lifestylepublishing.co.nz. You might like to include a short cover letter introducing yourself and a sample review (check out our latest reviews for our current style here, here and here).
