Our Rating:

This is Memory-Map’s newest GPS software, allowing users to view topo maps on map-capable Garmin GPS units. While it’s not the cheapest product of its kind, it includes a number of relevant, easy-to-use features. Additionally, it comes packaged with Memory-Map’s desktop software for use on a PC, Mac, Android or iOS device.

It’s a great combination, allowing users to plan trips, print maps, draw and upload routes and waypoints to take along on their GPS or smartphone, and download data after the trip to review or save – all with an easy to read, scaleable topo map background.

My favourite features are the ability to preview and explore the terrain in 3D and see elevation profiles in Memory-Map on my computer. Confirmed and maintained DOC huts and tracks also show up in purple on the map, so you know what to expect before you get to the trailhead. The 3D feature currently only works in the PC version, but a  future release is planned for Macs.

As a bit of a map snob, I didn’t find the Topo4GPS maps to be very elegant, but they are functional, easy to decipher and contain all the standard map features and then some. You can also zoom into 1:25k which is helpful in areas where the 1:50k scale is not detailed enough.

I trialled the Tramper package but there is also hunter and marine versions.

The software comes with easy to follow PC/Mac installation instructions, a pre-loaded micro-SD card for installation on your GPS and helpful support.

It’s a pretty handy product, both for home and the hills.
