Mt Robert, Nelson Lakes National Park
Awe-inspiring views are plentiful on this popular hike at Nelson Lakes.
There are two choices to summit Mt Robert (1421m): the direct but steep Pinchgut Track, or meandering Paddy’s Track, which passes Bushline Hut (14 bunks and water supply). The complete 8.4km circuit using both tracks takes about four hours.
There are no tarns on the top, but the quaint Relax Shelter, with a water tank, is just five minutes along Robert Ridge from the summit.
Find a flat place to camp among the dwarf tussock and patches of scree. Far below at night, St Arnaud glimmers on the edge of Kerr Bay. Drift off to sleep listening to kea cry as the wind whispers a song through the tussock.

Buckland Peaks, West Coast
Park 1.3km along Bucklands Peak Road and follow a 4WD track on a private easement for 8km. Take the marked Buckland Peaks Track, which climbs a steep spur through regenerating podocarp–beech forest, gaining 900m. After four hours is a subalpine zone of nei nei and leatherwood. Buckland Peaks Hut is visible 100m below in a hanging valley; a useful stop-over for water.
Continue upwards on an unmarked ridgeline that dips from Pt1175 into a saddle. Solid route-finding skills are essential if it’s cloudy. A scramble leads to granite peaks and diverse alpine flora. Water is available from a number of tarns around the 1200m contour, including Townson Tarn. Pick a suitable piece of real estate on which to camp.
The highest rampart (1325m) offers sublime views south to the jagged peaks of remote Paparoa Range. Beyond, Aoraki Mt Cook is vaguely visible. West is the Buller River mouth. After dark, the lights of Carters Beach twinkle in the distance.
