I am a fit outdoors person doing wilding pine work, weed control, guiding and LandSAR volunteering.
But over the last year my health has been an increasing struggle, and in March I had a diagnosis of cancer – grade three follicular lymphoma and a large tumour. Although it can be successfully treated with chemotherapy, it is incurable, and I will be monitored and treated for the rest of my life. It will more than likely come back at some time.
The lymphoma has caused significant lung restriction, restricted blood supply to organs and heavy fatigue.
I decided I needed a personal goal, a ‘drive’. Committing to Walk1200km has given me a wonderful focus. On days when I get a bit down I push myself to get out and keep moving, with all the benefits of doing so. I am enjoying doing easy walks I normally wouldn’t bother with, and discovering so much right on my doorstep.
Some days, the 3.3km on the flat is all I can achieve. However, I am managing to keep ahead to cover the few days I can’t get out. I enjoy pushing myself when I can, and this has caused extra pain some days, so every day is an interesting challenge!
Walk1200km is a critical motivator that is helping me through this life challenge. I will come out the other side in good shape to enjoy what the new me is going to be. Hopefully the old me will be back – we’ll see.
