A Recreate NZ trip to Nelson Lakes National Park

Recreate NZ is celebrating 20 years of life-changing adventures for young people with intellectual disabilities.

The charity was established in Auckland in 2002 to fill the void when CCS Disability Action stopped providing recreational services.

Recreate NZ works with 600 young people aged 10 to 35 in Auckland, Waikato, Bay of Plenty, Wellington and Christchurch.

“Adventure is a huge part of what we do here at Recreate NZ,” spokesperson Matt Alpe said.

“We have teamed up with Adventure Specialties on countless experiences in the outdoors, such as hiking to the summit of Mt Ruapehu, white-water rafting, canyoning, sea kayaking and caving.”

Benefits for those on these trips include keeping fit and healthy, experiencing a new part of New Zealand, a sense of achievement and personal satisfaction, and socialisation, Alpe said.

“It can be incredibly tough making friendships for young people with disabilities, especially through the past few years of lockdowns and disruptions, so the need for spending time with like-minded peers is huge.”

Caregivers also benefit.

“A weekend to themselves can mean a chance to recharge and relax.”
