With a few slight modifications, apple crumble is a dessert that is surprisingly easy to replicate in the backcountry.

This dish is commonly known as a popular dessert, but it’s equally good cooked up for a warm breakfast. No oven needed – just grab a couple of your favourite seasonal fruits and you’re away.

Serves: Two

Ingredients

  • 2 apples
  • 1 peach
  • 30g butter
  • 1tsp cinnamon
  • 1tsp cardamom
  • 1/2tsp nutmeg
  • 1 cup muesli
  • Optional toppings: coconut, nuts, chocolate

With a few slight modifications, apple crumble is a dessert that is surprisingly easy to replicate in the backcountry.

Method

At home: put all the spices into a small container.

At camp: melt the butter in a pot or pan (for which you have a cover) and chop the fruit into little cubes. Tip into the melted butter and add the spices. Cook the mix for about 10 minutes on a medium-low heat with the lid on until the fruit pieces are soft and starting to fall away around the edges. Add a splash of water if the liquid disappears or it starts to stick. Spoon the fruit mix into two bowls, dot some chocolate over and sprinkle the muesli, coconut and nuts on top.
