2017’s best outdoor socks

Bridgedale WoolFusion Trekker ($42.99). Available from www.ampro.co.nz.
Good outdoor socks wick moisture and allow your feet to breathe, reducing the chance of blisters and ensuring all-day comfort.

Moisture management
Dry feet are less likely to blister or overheat, but on a hot, long day your feet can sweat more than a cup of moisture. A good sock complements your boot’s lining by creating a gap between foot and boot which allows moisture to be drawn away from your foot, through the lining, to be released into the air.

Comfort
Padding is provided in key areas to absorb pressure from your boots. Areas that are frequently padded are: the heel, arch, toes, and occasionally on the shin.

Ventilation
Some socks have mesh panels which aid ventilation and enhance breathability.

Materials

All socks have different blends of synthetic and natural fibres. The exact mix will determine the quality, durability and comfort of the sock. Here’s what the various fibres do:

Wool: insulates the foot
Lycra, spandex, elastane: keep socks up
Nylon: adds durability
Coolmax or similar: wicks moisture

Construction
Socks are constructed to fit snugly and stay put when they’re on. An elasticised arch and ankle prevents the sock sliding forward and bunching around your toes. The weave – in various thicknesses and knits – creates airspace against your skin to keep feet dry and move moisture into the boot lining.

Seams
Chafe-free seams lay flat against your skin to reduce pressure points.

Now you know what to look for, it’s tie to choose a pair…
