Rocky runs Further Faster and says trips into the outdoors for him are all about going fast and light. All the gear he’s recommended here is what he personally uses.

Martin ‘Rocky’ Walker from Christchurch independent retailer Further Faster picks the essential kit for your summer trips.

Montane Dart Tee Long Sleeve $60

“This is a great baselayer; it’s super lightweight, made with a wickable fabric to keep you dry and the long sleeves keep the sun off,” says Rocky.

Montane Featherlite Smock $99.99

When you need protection from the wind, look no further than this smock, says Rocky: “It’s a lightweight, packable wind barrier. When you come out of the bushline and onto the tops where it’s breezy, you put this on and bam, the wind stops.”

Montane Prism Ultra Jacket $299

Montane’s lightest insulated jacket is a perfect outer layer for any fast paced activity. “This is a super packable insulation – it packs down tiny. If you’ve got a fastpacking set up, it’ll give you insulation at camp or when moving in cold conditions.”

Montane Trailblazer 30 $199

The Trailblazer is a day pack best suited to fast and light trips along the tops. “It fits close, like a vest, so it’s really stable,” says Rocky. “It’s got all the functionality you want and is a great pack for moving fast over open ground.” There’s also a 44l version for multi-day trips.

Montane Terra Pants $159

These pants have been a Montane staple for more than 15 years. “They’re one of best lightweight tamping pants you can get – you can really thrash them and they last forever,” says Rocky. Pants come in different leg lengths, so there’s a size for everybody.

Give Rocky and the team at Further Faster a call to discuss these items and any other gear for your summer adventures.
