As a world-champion adventure racer and lifelong explorer, Nathan Fa’avae has spent decades pushing his body and mind in the wildest terrain on earth. Along the way he learned a simple truth: quality food matters. We talked to Nathan about what fuels adventure – and why he started Real Meals.
How did outdoor adventure sports become such a big part of your life?
As a young teenager I was drifting along and making some poor choices. In my later teenage years I discovered the outdoors through outdoor education at school, and later at the local outdoor pursuits centre. From that time onwards, all I’ve wanted to do is be actively immersed in the adventure arena and community. That’s where I first found something I was truly passionate about.
You’ve competed at the highest level in adventure racing. What role does nutrition play in performance and safety outdoors?
It’s absolutely critical. When you’re tired, cold and miles from anywhere, food becomes more than fuel – it’s energy, morale and clarity. I’ve learned that good nutrition outdoors isn’t a luxury; it’s essential. At the toughest point of any adventure, food is also a comfort and one thing you can control, so taste and enjoyment are just as important as nutrition.
What inspired you to create Real Meals?
After decades of expeditions in New Zealand and around the world, I got tired of eating poor-quality freeze-dried food. Too many meals were overly processed or just didn’t taste good. I wanted something better – real ingredients, great-tasting meals, simply freeze-dried and lightweight for the outdoors. That’s how Real Meals was born: real food for real adventures.
There are a lot of outdoor meal options today. What makes Real Meals different?
We use a different manufacturing process from other companies and focus on genuine, recognisable ingredients and a chef-crafted approach. Our meals are designed to taste like something you’d proudly serve at your dinner table, not something you eat just because you’re in the bush.
When you’re developing new meals, who are you thinking about out there enjoying them?
Anyone who enjoys time outdoors – trampers, hunters, paddlers, trail runners or families on their first overnight mission. We work hard to make sure everyone’s tastes and preferences are catered for in our range. We believe everyone should have a favourite Real Meals dish, whatever their palate.
What do you hope people experience when they eat a Real Meal on their adventure?
Pleasure, nourishment and comfort. There’s something special about sitting by a river or on a mountaintop and enjoying a warm, satisfying meal. I hope Real Meals helps people feel strong, fuelled and connected to the outdoors, so they truly enjoy the experience and want to get out there again.
Finally: what’s your number one tip for a successful adventure?
Just get out there. Adventure doesn’t need to be complicated – start small if you need to, but start. Pack smart, respect the environment, look after your mates, and take a moment to appreciate where you are. The outdoors has a way of teaching you what really matters.
