The NZ Alpine Club's ski touring guide book

This winter Federated Mountain Clubs (FMC) is promoting ski touring as part of is Outdoor Community campaign. In previous years it has promoted pack rafting and canyoning.

The year-long programme aims to inspire more people to safely explore New Zealand’s skiing opportunities.

The campaign identifies a pursuit that takes place in the same environment as tramping and shares the ethos of exploration, companionship and appreciation of nature. That pursuit’s development then becomes a priority for FMC for the next year.

FMC is reaching out to its member clubs and working with organisations like Avalanche NZ, SkiTouring.co.nz, the New Zealand Alpine Club and ski fields around the country to encourage and facilitate safe and responsible ski touring.

FMC especially wants to see more club-run ski touring trips, introductory touring courses and mentoring.

It coincides with the NZ Alpine Club’s new guide to backcountry skiing which goes on sale from July 5.
