The new RockRidge trail offers the perfect balance of retreat and adventure.

Bookings are open for the inaugural season of RockRidge, an exciting new multi-day adventure in Windwhistle, Canterbury. Part hike, part retreat, RockRidge goes beyond the typical walk-and-hut itinerary by offering gourmet meals crafted from the finest local produce, outstanding accommodation and authentic high-country hospitality alongside sweeping views of the Canterbury Plains, braided rivers and the Southern Alps.

The track is now open to the public thanks to two local families, the Harpers of Quartz Hill Station and the McElreas of Washpen Falls, who have carved a purpose-built route through their high-country farms.

“It has taken sweat, tears and a whole lot of heart, but it feels like we have  found something special,” say Dan and Georgie Harper. “The high country is something to be felt, not just admired from a distance. Sharing that with others has always been our dream.”

From February 2026, RockRidge will host small groups of up to 10 people on a two-day, all-inclusive adventure.

The 31km track includes 1750m of elevation over two days. Gentle gradients make it suitable for walkers of moderate fitness, while the steeper sections reward with some of the most spectacular views in Canterbury. Along the way, hikers will encounter bushlines, rocky outcrops, rolling hills and dramatic terrain.

At day’s end guests can relax in beautiful farm-stay accommodation complete with hot showers and fine linen. Meals feature farm-to-table cuisine, fresh local produce and thoughtful wine pairings. Leave the sleeping bag at home – at RockRidge every comfort is considered.

The retreat also provides rare insight into working high-country farms. Guests will be treated to stories of resilience, stewardship and community.

“At RockRidge our aim is simple – to share the essence of the high country,” say Henry and Megan McElrea. “It’s wild and raw with a rugged beauty that brings people together in meaningful ways.”

Both families are deeply committed to caring for the land, from trapping predators to enhancing biodiversity, and for them RockRidge is a natural extension of those values.

With every detail taken care of, RockRidge offers the perfect balance of retreat and adventure. 2026 Bookings are open for February to May and October to December. Spaces are strictly limited.
