A lenticular cloud forms in the Lawrence Valley. Photo: Pat Barrett

PAUSING FOR a break on our tramp to Lawrence Hut, we dropped our packs and turned to view the valley, catching sight of this spectacular phenomenon arching over the valley head. Lenticulars, or hogs backs as they are also known, often form on the lee side of the Alps, ahead of an approaching nor-westerly rain front. Thus they are harbingers of the coming storm.

Camera settings Nikon D800, ISO100, 20mm, f/11, 1/100sec.
