Marmot has made great down-filled products for a long time, but I admit testing the Sawtooth is the first time I’ve tried one of their sleeping bags.

Marmot sells the 650-loft Sawtooth as a three-season bag with a  comfort rating of -3.3°C, but for me, the size, bulk and loft of the bag would be good enough to use it all year round in any hut and in all but the coldest winter camping situations. I don’t think it packs small enough to be a true three-season bag and at 1300g, it is heavier than all the other bags reviewed. Weight is all-important for most people, so things like the Sawtooth’s double draft tubes around the zip might be overkill, even though they undoubtedly provide a warmer bag.

It’s with comfort and warmth that the Sawtooth shines. I can’t recall when I last slept in a more comfortable sleeping bag and I’ve had the opportunity to try a few different brands over the years. The down fill is around 650g and I was impressed with how evenly it lofted, with no obvious cold spots. The nylon inner and outer is soft and comfortable next-to-skin, and the stitching doesn’t leak down. I found the cut of the standard-size bag, including hood, cosy for my 1.83m frame without being cramped.

It also breathed well and while on one occasion I woke up because I was too warm, I wasn’t clammy with sweat.

The price is good for a bag of this quality and if you were looking for a bag to use all year round for hut nights, and three-season camping, then it’s worth a look.
