Our Rating:

One of the sturdiest of the three season boots reviewed, the Durand is suited to both day tramping as well as longer overnight walks on a variety of surfaces. Wide-fitting, the Durand is built on Keen’s distinctive broad last that makes an ideal fit for Kiwi feet, as well as being a stable foot platform.

The sole unit is excellent; comprising an integrated rubber toe cap and partial rand. The tread is aggressive and well arranged for grip on a variety of surfaces. This boot was one of the best in this review in slippery and muddy conditions. While the heel isn’t as distinct as it might be on a traditional tramping boot, it still bites pretty well due to good tread distribution. The men’s version weighs 1138g and the women’s 854g.

The uppers are a mix of leather and synthetic material, with a waterproof/breathable insert. Ankle support is excellent, and the foot is well tensioned into the sturdy heel cup by a webbing strap that is drawn tight as you adjust the laces. A deep cut-away in the back of the boot allows heaps of room for your achilles to move unimpeded, and I also noticed the heel height to forefoot height ratio is high; this gives the boot a good rocker and might alleviate achilles tendon issues for those who have a propensity for such problems.

In use, I found the Durand a very capable three season adventurer and could not find much to fault; perhaps the only issue being some stitching in the forefoot-flex area that will probably be the first sign of wear.

It’s a well designed boot made from top quality materials and an ideal fit for the wider-of-hoof.
