Wilderness walking allows nature’s most marvellous sights to be seen. But when we asked the Walk1200km group what is the most beautiful or breathtaking sight encountered while on a walk, we were blown away. You will be too once you get your shoes on. Here’s a selection of responses.

I remember when building up my fitness again after a period of inactivity, walking to the top of the Port Hills and seeing Whakaraupō/Lyttelton Harbour laid out below. It literally took my breath away. Although I’d seen it from Summit Road before, having worked for the view made it so much sweeter. I’ve been up there countless times since, but it never ceases to make me pause. It’s my favourite place to go and unwind after a busy week.”

“There are so many, it is hard to select one. The view from Robert Ridge on the way to Angelus Hut is pretty high on the list, though.”
