Each month we set three new #microchallenges to add interest and silliness to your kilometres.

These three #microchallenges will help you better appreciate your surroundings and have fun on your walks. Our favourite nine #microchallenge completers receive a Walk1200km badge. The best entry for each challenge receives a prize from our partners.

#microchallenge31: Play in the snow

The middle of winter is a chance to play in the snow. Can you get someone to photograph you making a snow angel, throwing a snowball or otherwise playing in the snow?

#microchallenge31 Partner prize: A pair of feet-warming Bridgedale Midweight Merino Performance Fit socks

#microchallenge32: Show us how far you’ve walked by the state of your shoes

How worn out are your shoes – have they got any grip left, holes in the upper that your toes poke through, or are they in pristine condition because you’ve only just started? Photograph your shoes (as nicely as possible please) and post the kilometres you’ve racked up in them.

#microchallenge32 Partner prize: Salewa Mountain Trainer Lite shoes worth $320

#microchallenge33: Walk 10% further this month

Winter can be a hard time to build motivation for a walk. That’s why we want you to walk 10% further this month than you would normally – there’s nothing like going for a walk to spur even more walking! Average your monthly distances to date then add 10%. Show us your month’s tally on your progress tracker along with a comment describing how you arrived at your distance and what it felt like to complete the challenge.

#microchallenge33 Partner prize: A $100 voucher from Further Faster

How to enter

Take a photo of yourself (yes, people make a photo more interesting!) completing the challenge and share it on the Walk1200km Facebook group with a descriptive caption and using the relevant hashtag – e.g. #microchallenge32 – by August 25 (or email entries to walk1200km@lifestylepublishing.co.nz with the relevant hashtag in the subject line and a brief description in the email). Winners will be published in the September 2023 issue of Wilderness.
