Trail times vary by person, but figuring out a general idea and then adjusting based on your pace and trip factors helps you plan more precisely.
Starting point: Average speed on flat terrain with a pack –> 3.2km/hr, plus 1hr for every 305m of elevation gain. Add 5min of rest per hour on the trail.
Calculate!: (Distance in kilometres ÷ 3.2km/hr + Total elevation ÷ 305m/hr) + (5min x Active time hours) = Total time.
For example, a 12.8km trail with 610m of elevation gain:
(12.8km ÷ 3.2km + 610m ÷ 305m/hr) + (5min x Active time) = Total time
(4hr + 2hr) + (5min x Active time) = Total Time
6hr + 30min = 6.5hr
Time to make sunrise or sunset, avoid afternoon storms, make it to camp early or push your limits… all come down to planning.
Factors to consider:
- Physical condition
- Trail type (or lack of trail)
- Elevation +/-
- Altitude
- Pack weight
- Group size (bigger = slower)
- Scenic stops
