Essentials

Add or subtract as needed, but here’s a starting point! Package in compartments or smaller ziplocks in a dry bag to make grab and go fast! (In an easily identifiable kit)

  • Space blanket
  • Heat packs
  • Water purification tablets (Extra to your main water system. Only flush wounds with clean water)
  • Storm proof matches
  • Small lighter
  • Plus a pencil and notes! Keep track of patient info, symptoms, timeline, and all other details

Environment kit

Protect your patient from the elements. Even in the summer, patients will lose heat quickly!

  • Heat packs under arms and groin
  • Insulate under with pack or sleeping bag
  • Space blanket
  • Use what ya got! Jackets or sleeping bag

Medications kit

Clearly label pill description, dosage, time, etc. if repackaging meds. Consult your doctor if unsure!

  • Anti-inflammatories
  • Pain meds
  • Allergy meds
  • Anti-nausea
  • Small packet of honey or glucose
  • Anti-diarrhoea
  • Plus anything specific to your group (epipen, inhaler, etc.)
  • Plus anything specific to your trip (altitude, water or food borne illness, etc.)

Majors kit

The bigger uh-ohs.

Sprains, strains, and fractures

  • Triangular bandage
  • Splint (SAM or small metal with edges taped)
  • Elastic bandage

Bleeds

  • Medical tape
  • Roller gauze
  • Non-adherent gauze
  • Gauze sponge
  • Abdominal gauze
  • Clotting sponge (expensive but good addition)

Minors kit

The common ouchies.

  • Bandaids/plasters (of varying shapes and sizes)
  • Moleskin or blister plasters
  • Alcohol wipes
  • BZK (benzalkonium chloride) wipes – sting-free antispetic!
  • Skin tack wipes – helps tape and plasters stick
  • Burn gel packet
  • Tweezers
  • Safety pins
