Have you ever wondered how the Back Country Cuisine meals you eat on your outdoor adventures came into being? Who chose the flavour, where did the recipe come from and how was it made?
Meal inspiration
New meal inspiration is everywhere – a favourite meal from childhood, a fantastic takeaway you had or something you ate on an overseas holiday. Ideas and suggestions come to us as consumer and team feedback, which then goes into Back Country Cuisine’s product development process.

Development and testing
Once we’ve got an idea, the next step is to create a trial recipe and source any ingredients. Our food technologist then makes the meal to check that it is tasty. If it is, we enter the relevant data into our ingredient management system to see what the meal’s nutritional profile looks like. We repeat these steps until we get a great tasting meal that provides the amount of energy needed to fuel an outdoor adventure. Then we test it on ourselves and our brand ambassadors. Because we prepare every ingredient separately and only combine them in the pouch, we can ensure that every meal tastes the same and delivers the same level of nutrition.

Production and distribution
Once we approve a new meal, it is then scheduled for production. We normally do a small run first to make sure it works as planned, and if it does, we send samples of the meal to stores to try before we launch it.
Once we’ve made a great new meal, we deliver it to your favourite outdoor store, ready for your next outdoor adventure.
The next part of the process is up to you. Choose your Back Country Cuisine meal, boil the water and follow the instructions on the pouch. Always remember, you can add more boiling water after the rehydration period; you can’t remove boiling water if you’ve added too much.
Pouch recycling
Back Country Cuisine pouches can be recycled. Take them home after use, wash and dry them and put them in the soft plastics recycling bin on your next trip to the supermarket.
