Featured Jacket: Rab Glaceon Pro Down Jacket ($529.95). www.outfitters.co.nz

Price:

$529.95

Our Rating:

594g (m) 564g (w)

Overview

The well-featured Glaceon Pro is generously insulated with 265g of 700 fill-power hydrophobic down beneath a 20D Pertex Quantum Pro outer. This winter-weight jacket is oriented towards technical users; it has an adjustable, helmet-compatible hood with stiffened peak, adjustable cuffs and hem, a two-way long-life Vislon zip, fleecy hand pockets and an external chest pocket. Both outer and inner fabrics, and the down, are recycled.

Performance

This is a super-cosy jacket with plush baffles that extend into the neck and hood. Although it’s designed for winter climbing, its warmth and weatherproofing will be appreciated by any mountain traveller in the colder months. There are lighter, more packable  winter jackets, but details like glove-friendly cuffs, a generous Napoleon pocket, fleece-backed hand pockets, a large hood and two-way zip make this a performance-oriented garment. The hood can be cinched around the face, and combined with the high collar it provides excellent protection. Insulation differences aside, this is the most weatherproof of the jackets reviewed due to the wind- and water-shedding Pertex Quantum Pro fabric, which is microporous-coated for water resistance.

What we liked: Water-resistant face fabric, high degree of weather protection, good value.

Limitations: Not as packable as some jackets in this class, too warm for most people for mild weather use.

Best for: Weather protection and winter climbing and tramping above the bushline

Why buy the Glaceon Pro Down Jacket?

Complete with performance features for active use, the Glaceon Pro provides a high degree of weather protection, durability and value for money – benefits that will be appreciated by anyone looking for a warm winter jacket.
