676g / 20l
What we liked: Comfortable, easy to pack and refill, few failure points, durable
What we don’t: Main zip exposed to the elements, back panel not very breathable
Overview
This low-profile pack is designed for cycling and hiking. It has some typical mountain-bike pack features, such as a 2L hydration system; a narrow, stable shape; ventilated harness; and straps to secure a helmet. It also has capacity for extended day tramps or overnight rides.
Fit and comfort
It’s available in S/M (17.5l) and L/XL (20l) sizes. I’m 1.76m tall and the large fitted me well. The waist belt and shoulder straps are made with thin, flexible Regulator airmesh, which is super comfortable and ventilated. The mesh and foam back panel has ventilation grooves but is not as airy as other packs in this class.
Adjustability
The top two compression straps can secure a helmet and reduce pack volume, but the bottom pair could be positioned a little higher up. There are no other stability features, though, such as a shock cord volume reducer or load lifters on the top of the shoulder straps.
Ease of use
Simplicity is one of this pack’s strongest points. Entry is via a full length vertical zip, and the hydration bladder has its own side entry compartment. This makes it very easy to pack and organise and to refill water when the pack is loaded. There are two small hip belt pockets and an external top pocket, which would be improved with sunglasses-friendly lining. The main zip has no cover, so it’s exposed to rain, or mud off your tyres. It would be preferable to have a rain flap or water-resistant zip here.
Durability
This pack is built to be long lasting rather than ultralight, so the sturdy zips and 210D recycled nylon body should endure plenty of use.
Value
This pack is well thought out and functional, but its feature set is minimal compared with some packs for this price.
Why buy the Dirt Roamer?
It may not be as feature-packed or as well ventilated as some, but this pack’s thoughtful, versatile design and form-hugging fit make it a practical all-round day pack.
We recommend for: Long day walks and rides when you need to carry extra gear.
