Best for: Long day hikes and lightly loaded tramping on easy to moderate formed tracks.

Overview

This ‘athletic hiker’ has ultralight synthetic uppers and thick midsole cushioning integrated into a grippy Vibram TC5+ Traction Lug sole. These attributes are common to the latest innovations in lightweight boots, but although this boot is a trailblazer for its low weight, high comfort and supportive sole design, its range is limited.

Performance

A notably refined fit and high-volume toe box accommodated my wide-ish feet comfortably. Although the cushy 34–24mm stack of the FloatPro midsole has a running shoe feel, making it very forgiving of trail shock, this boot is stiff for purpose too, owing to a full-length nylon/fibreglass FlexPlate. The cuff (high for a mid) protects the ankles from knocks, the Gore-Tex lined upper is mostly ripstop nylon, which is dust-proof and quick drying, and the mesh tongue aids ventilation.

The sole has micro-textured 4mm lugs that fractionally enhance grip by increasing surface area in contact with the trail surface. The partial heel brake assists traction too, but the balance of this boot’s sole design and soft midsole tips more towards comfort on formed tracks than confidence in rough terrain. The upper’s minimal overlays don’t provide much abrasion resistance or protect the toes and sides of feet from impacts, and the soft midsole foam is prone to gouging.

What we like

Among the lightest in class, very comfortable, supportive grippy sole, fast drying.

Limitations

Uppers have minimal foot and abrasion protection, expensive.

Why buy the Moab Speed 2 Mid?

If you’re looking for versatile running-shoe comfort with the foot-plate protection and support for long hiking days on Great Walk-style tracks, these are a great option. They’re so light you might use them as your favourite walking shoe, too.
