Circling the sleeping giant

In this episode, author Matthew Cattin reads from his journey around Ruapehu’s iconic Round the Mountain Track, one of Tongariro National Park’s most challenging multi-day routes.

Matthew and his wife Agustina set out in search of solitude and good weather, crossing lush beech forest, barren lava fields and the Rangipo Desert, with spectacular waterfalls, volcanic rivers and alpine landscapes along the way. They encounter everything from a precarious swingbridge over the Whangaehu River to the crystal-clear Ohinepango Springs – and even squeeze in a detour to the Tama Lakes.

Matthew also talks about the history of the track, the hazards of Ruapehu and the remarkable luck that gave them a perfect weather window before the mountain’s mood changed.
