In each issue, three new #microchallenges are set to add interest and silliness to your kilometres.

These three fun #microchallenges will help you to appreciate your surroundings and have fun on your walks. Our favourite six #microchallenge completers receive a money-can’t-buy limited edition Walk1200km badge, and the best entry for each challenge receives a prize from our partners.

#microchallenge10: Become a one percenter!

One of our most popular microchallenges is back: do one walk of at least 12km – or 1 per cent of the challenge. Be sure to describe where you went and how this walk compared to your usual outings. Include proof (e.g. a screen grab of your walking app) and a photo of yourself  at completion!

#microchallenge10 Partner prize: A Big Agnes Impassable 20 pack worth $360!

#microchallenge11: Amazing autumn

What makes autumn a special time to walk? Is it the changing colours of trees, a crisp morning or something else? Capture the joy of autumn and start your entry: ‘Autumn is an amazing time to walk because …’

#microchallenge11 Partner prize: A $100 Yum breakfast hamper!

#microchallenge12: Find a pistol stick

Make a ‘bang!’ on your next walk in the woods by finding a great pistol-shaped stick.

#microchallenge12 Partner prize: A pair of Bridgedale Midweight Merino Performance Fit socks!

How to enter

You must be a registered Walk1200km participant to win. Take a photo of yourself completing the challenge (yes, people make a photo more interesting and winsome!) and share it on the Walk1200km Facebook group with a descriptive caption and using the relevant hashtag – e.g. #microchallenge07 – by May 18 (or email entries to walk1200km@lifestylepublishing.co.nz with the relevant hashtag in the subject line and the description in the email). Winners will be published in the July/August 2025 issue of Wilderness.
