Dancers do it. The law is all about it. Applied to a recipe or poem – interpretation is everything. So when we asked Walk1200km participants how they interpreted the challenge, we got a response as varied as the walks people are doing.
‘For me it’s recording deliberate walking’
At times it’s hard between shift work and kids, but it’s a major mental health gain and worth the juggle! It’s the goal that gives the motivation to do it or I probably wouldn’t bother some days!

‘It’s an adjustable challenge’
I have vastly increased the intentional walks and I’ve got my husband joining me for most of those. I think it’s an individual thing: what we want to achieve and how we record it. That’s the beauty of this. A collective endeavour that’s fully adjustable to every individual’s needs and desires.

‘I’m recording deliberate walks only’
I can do around 8-11km regularly per day when I’m working, I don’t want to include that in my total. For me the plan is to do the 1200km in 12 months.
– Jo Wilson
‘I have also added in the goal of a daily intentional walk in 2023.’
This challenge has been the motivation on days I don’t feel like going as I like having a goal. I’ve found I walk now where previously I may have driven.
– Rachel Wallace

‘I count my swims, too’
I count deliberate walks.
But if I surf, swim, or bike for over 40 minutes I count that as 3.3km which is the ‘daily target’ because it’s about taking time to be active and to be mindful.
– Dee Cleary

‘I am actually hoping to do 1600km this year.’
I started moving for Sweat With Pride in June 2022, starting at a very low baseline! And have tried to keep going since.
– Donnelle Cheree
‘I am aiming for no zero days’
I record my deliberate walks only and am realising how many zero days I have. It’s making me feel I need to be more accountable and get out daily.
– Rebecca Marvin

‘I like the motivation’
Walk1200km is a good group to get you motivated. I do a lot over and above with everyday things but decided to only count intentional walks.
Certainly makes you get out there regardless of weather. Nothing wrong with the kayaking and cycling included.
