Green Lake Hut, Fiordland National Park

A challenging trip for little legs, the track to Green Lake Hut from Borland Bivouac – the easiest of three possible routes to the hut – rewards those willing to dip their toes in adventure.

Starting in beautiful Fiordland bush, the track leads to the first of two tussock clearings where wet feet and a bit of mud are hard to avoid. This is compensated for by a stadium of native bush cheering you on.

After weaving through a second clearing where tussocks tower over small children, the track enters another native bush wonderland. Moss and ferns carpet the ground, and in summer a dry riverbed makes the perfect playground and picnic spot. A steep 150m ascent through the last section of bush is the final hurdle, after which you descend to the shores of Green Lake, 822m above sea level.

Mountains rising out of the lake provide a stunning backdrop for the remaining 20-minute walk to the hut. At this point, if you’ve taken little people, squeals of excitement and new-found energy can be heard as they run up the boardwalk to the cosy 12-bunk hut overlooking the lake.

The mud, sweat and a few children’s tears are soon forgotten as you enjoy a hot meal and some well-earned chocolate. Memories are made. Character is built. Is it worth it? Definitely.
