The Tararua Tramping Club has celebrated the centenary of the oldest club-built hut in the country.
The club commissioned bushmen Joe Gibbs and Jack Fisk to build Field Hut in 1924. It took the two men two months to build the track to the hut so horses could bring up iron and other supplies.Timber was pit sawn on site. They then spent two months constructing the hut. It was opened with a party on Labour Day 1924.
Over the last century the hut has provided shelter to thousands of trampers as they complete the iconic southern crossing route. Working bees over the years have ensured it remains shipshape. Recently the hut has been recognised as a New Zealand Heritage Category 1 place.
On November 3, TTC hosted trampers to Field Hut’s Centenary party, complete with billy tea, an elaborately decorated cake and a tramping singalong.
